Due to cleaner and environmentally friendly, new energy vehicles like electric cars are considered the future of the automotive industry. But for the moment, the production of batteries in electric vehicles is still considered environmentally harmful. A group of students from the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands is working on a new type of fuel for sustainable vehicles. The fuel they studied was called formic acid, and for this reason they named their team FAST (the short for Formic Acid for Sustainable Transport) team. With the help of an Ultimaker 2 3D printer, the FAST team effectively produced a scale model of a prototype car and tested it with formic acid as the fuel source.
As they prepared to prototype their prototypes in a year, FAST turned to Ultimaker 2 3D printers to make customized base-related devices when it came to parts for the Formauto Junior scale model car. Traditionally, these components must all be custom milled elsewhere, a time-consuming and costly process that can take weeks to complete. But with rapid prototypes for 3D printing, the FAST team soon developed Formauto Junior with formic acid. Formic acid is a sustainable fuel that can be converted to hydrogen and carbon oxides by newly discovered catalysts that, once converted to hydrogen, pass through newly discovered oxides that convert to hydrogen and carbon. Once converted to hydrogen, this fuel can be used to generate electricity. The FAST team's goal is to enable the use of formic acid fuel in a conventional fuel tank.
"Our vision is to make formic acid a new standard for sustainable mobility." The FAST team said: "We believe that formic acid will bring solutions to current and future problems and many choose to use hydrogen fuel or electric vehicles to solve problems, However, formic acid is inherently superior to both. "
FAST team studies have shown that formic acid has a very high potential as a sustainable fuel. Unlike electric vehicles that require technically sophisticated charging stations and hydrogen fuel vehicles that require specialty fuel tanks to store pressurized hydrogen, formic acid technology basically uses the infrastructure such as our existing gas stations. In addition, formic acid fuels are completely carbon-neutral and can be generated by wind farms or solar panels.
Earlier this year, the FAST team successfully converted the Formauto Junior scale model car into a remote control model car driven by a formic acid engine. Their next plan is to have a prototype powered by a factor of 1000 before the end of the year and even try to power a real bus.
