According to a plan announced on Monday, public telephones in the streets of New York City will become history, and stand-alone equipment will replace public telephones to provide free wireless Internet connectivity and cell phone charging. Several companies in New York City have launched the CityBridge project to replace the old public telephone system. Up to 10,000 columnar devices will be placed in five districts next year. The charging device as well as the wireless internet connection are also equipped with a touch screen that allows users to access city agencies and display digital advertisements and announcements.
6452 devices will replace 8400 payphones installed around the city. The Upper West Side payphone will be retained as the history of New York City. The cost of the program is mainly from advertising revenue. New York City will generate 500 million U.S. dollars in advertising revenue in the next 12 years. The system will expand broadband access. The CityBridge project is comprised of a number of corporate companies, including Qualcomm, Comark, Control Group and Titan. The consortium has promised that the project in New York City is expected to create as many as 150 jobs in manufacturing, technology and advertising, and 650 support jobs.
