Toshiba said that in 2008 it launched the Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB). This type of battery uses lithium titanate as a negative electrode, which can achieve rapid charge and discharge, over 15,000 charge/discharge cycles, and can be used in environments as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. The battery has been used in automobiles, buses, and the battery used by the Mitsubishi i MiEV electric car is SCiB.
On this basis, Toshiba Corporation developed a lithium-ion battery with a titanium-niobium oxide anode material. The company uses new technologies to synthesize and mix titanium-niobium oxide crystals and store lithium ions more efficiently in the crystal structure. Lithium ion storage capacity of this battery is twice that of graphite lithium battery. In general, the greater the amount of lithium ions, the higher the energy density.
Currently, Toshiba has produced a 50-ampere-hour, palm-size (111mm x 194mm x 14.5mm) new-generation lithium battery sample that has been tested to retain the current long life, low-temperature use, safety, and fast charging characteristics of SCiB. For example, a traditional lithium battery fast charge can only charge about 80% of the electricity for 30 minutes, while the new generation of lithium battery can charge to 90% of electricity in just 6 minutes. Toshiba’s test electric car eventually ran about 320 kilometers after charging for 6 minutes. At the same time, the battery's energy density is twice that of the same volume of SCiB. After charging and discharging 5,000 times, this kind of battery can still maintain more than 90% of the battery capacity, and can still fast charge under the low temperature environment of minus 10 degrees of Celsius.
Osamu Hori, director of Toshiba’s Corporate R&D Center, said: “We are very excited about the potential of the new titanium-niobium oxide anode material and the next-generation SCiB. This is not a gradual improvement. This is a disruptive improvement that will affect electric vehicles. The cruising range and performance have a significant impact, and we will continue to improve battery performance and will formally adopt the next-generation SCiB in fiscal year 2019."
Toshiba said that it will continue to develop higher-energy-density batteries to expand the range of applications for electric vehicles, and to accelerate the completion of ultra-fast rechargeable batteries, and strive to commercialize the new generation of SCiB in 2019.
