According to the news, on December 5th, 2012, Teijin Co., Ltd. began mass production of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) parts. The production speed of these parts is high, which takes less than one minute and will be targeted at the automotive market first.
Teijin’s factory in Matsuyama, Japan will help the company accelerate cooperation with global automakers. The company has a composite innovation center in Japan and a composite materials application center in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
"CFRTP parts are likely to achieve an unprecedented weight loss and are expected to be widely used in the automotive and other industries," the company said. "These parts are also highly recyclable because the thermoplastic resin used can be reheated and reshaped into new shapes."
The Tokyo-based company also stated that it is exploring applications other than automobiles. Teijin said that the goal is to achieve annual carbon fiber composite product sales of 150 to 200 billion yen (approximately 1.8 to 2.4 billion U.S. dollars) by 2020 or so.
