Analysis of driver's death rate in the accident of passenger car crash in the United States

The highest SUV mortality rate for car drivers in a crash was reported by the U.S. Highway Insurance Association (IIHS) in June this year, which reported the driver’s death rate in the United States’ 2005-08 passenger car model during a collision incident in 2006-09. According to the agency's data compiled by Gasgoo.com, among passenger cars, small vans (equivalent to China's so-called MPVs), SUVs and pickups, the highest driver mortality rate was in sedan cars, with a mortality rate of 56 (the number of people (per million registered vehicles/year), followed by pickups (52), both higher than the passenger vehicle average (48). The driver mortality rate was the lowest when there were collisions between small vans and SUVs, 25 and 28, respectively (see Table 1).

From the perspective of different types of accidents, among the multiple-vehicle crashes, the driver’s mortality rate is the highest in passenger cars (30), followed by pickups and small vans (both 17), and the lowest is the SUV (SUV). 14); In bicycle crashes, the highest driver mortality rate is pickup (35), followed by cars (25), SUVs and small vans (14 and 7 respectively).

In single-vehicle crashes, bicycle rollover is relatively high. In the event of a bicycle rollover, the driver’s death rate was the highest in pickups and cars (21 and 12, respectively), the SUV was lower (6), and the minivan was the lowest (2).

Driver death rate is higher when a smaller vehicle crashes. In all types of passenger vehicles, the driver with the lowest death rate during a crash is a larger vehicle. For example, in the four-door sedan, the driver’s mortality rate for the largest car in the crash is 46, and the smallest car is 82 (see Table 2).

For further breakdown of the types of passenger vehicles, the highest driver mortality rate in a collision is a micro-sports car with a mortality rate as high as 83. The lowest mortality rate (or the safest) is a large four-wheel-drive SUV with a mortality rate of 15.

From the perspective of all types of passenger vehicles, the highest and lowest driver mortality rates are shown in Table 3-6. Among them, the lowest death rate of the driver when the car crashed was the luxury car, and the highest mortality rate of the driver when the pickup truck crashed was Nissan or Ford brand cars. The driver death rate data for other types of crashes can be found in Exhibit 7.

The death rate in the table in this article refers to the driver's death rate (per million registered vehicles per year) in the 2005-09 crash in 2006-09. However, not every new model in 2005-08 was counted, but only the latest models in this period. A special case is that, although the latest model of the Malibu was the 2008 model during this period, its 2007 model continues to be sold under the name of Mai Ruibao Classic Edition. Therefore, the 2008 model Malibu and Mai Rui Bao classic version is in the statistics range.
