At the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2018, Volvo showed its new lidar sensing technology to Volkswagen. The technology is developed by Volvo in collaboration with Luminar, an advanced sensor company for autonomous vehicles. Volvo claims to be the most advanced lidar sensor technology to date.
This new lidar sensing technology uses pulsed laser signals to detect objects, which is of great help to the development of automated vehicles. It provides reliable remote sensing capabilities for autonomous vehicles, enabling them to travel safely in complex traffic environments and at higher speeds. The new technology is capable of detecting moving human bodies and limbs through laser radar, a precision that previous sensors could not achieve. The new technology is also capable of detecting humans and other objects as far as 200 meters, and the detection range exceeds any currently available lidar technology.
Luminar founder and CEO Austin Russell said: "The Volvo Car R&D team is developing cutting-edge autonomous driving technology at an impressive speed. With the expansion of our cooperation, Volvo will remain at the forefront of the development of autonomous driving systems. And eventually developed a fully self-driving car that frees the driver from the entire driving process and provides it to consumers."
Volvo released the 360c concept car in September this year. This concept car shows Volvo's latest interpretation of ground transportation – the time spent on travel will be more fully utilized through advanced autonomous driving technology. There is no steering wheel, no traditional engine, and of course no seat for the driver. The Volvo 360c concept car will offer four main uses: bedroom, mobile office, living room and entertainment space, explaining the evolution of future autonomous vehicles as a travel tool.
