Linear Technology has introduced the LTC4263, an autonomous single-channel power supply (PSE) controller with on-chip MOSFETs for systems that comply with the IEEE802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard. This integrated circuit requires only a few external components and is a complete single-port PSE solution for detecting, classifying, and providing isolated 48V power to a powered device (PD) connected to the integrated circuit. The LTC4263 provides a standard-compliant AC or DC method for detecting PD removal, with advanced on-chip control algorithms, and autonomous operation for all required tasks without processor intervention.
The LTC4263 utilizes internal sense resistors to provide accurate surge, current limit and short circuit control to further ensure IEEE802.3af compatibility. Port current limit can be configured to automatically adjust to accommodate the detected PD class. Advanced detection and power monitoring technology prevents damage to traditional pure data devices while still providing power to newer Power over Ethernet devices. When driven from a single supply, the LTC4263 also allows for simple power management across multiple ports.
The IC's rich features allow it to greatly simplify the PSE implementation with a single 48V supply and a small number of passive support components. The device is also well suited for IEEE802.3af compliant endpoint/mid-span systems, including low port count PSE or standalone PSE.
