Caterpillar receives Cat C280 generator set order

      Recently, Caterpillar's Cat Tier 4 Final C280-16 generator set was selected by customer Edison Chouest to power its two new ships. This product is another milestone created by Caterpillar in the field of marine engines.

       Manufacturers have long sought the best balance between high power and high emissions of engines. The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) T4 emission standards have the most stringent regulations for diesel particulate emissions and nitrogen oxide emissions from engines.

The Cat Tier 4 Final C280-16 generator set is the largest horsepower engine in the EPA T4 phase emissions certification for the shipbuilding industry and the largest generator set manufactured by Caterpillar using diesel electric propulsion. Each ship at Edison Chouest will be powered by four Cat C280-16 generator sets, with a single unit rated at 5,060 kW and 900 rpm.

        Caterpillar Marine T4 technology combines a post-processing unit with a fuel-efficient engine to reduce NOx emissions to meet relevant emission standards. The Cat C280's T4 solution uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to minimize customer operating costs. The SCR module is also designed with the cabin in mind, compact and easy to arrange. Cat C280 inherits the 20-year-old 3600 series of components with reliable and durable features, and is equipped with a sophisticated, fully proven, electronically controlled fuel injection system. In addition, the Cat C280 is the flagship product of the shipbuilding industry under heavy-duty, high-intensity conditions, and the Cat C280 has improved design in terms of reducing smoke emissions and extending maintenance intervals to provide customers with better performance.
